Summary description of the project:
Sustainability is the principle of the future. Operating sustainably means respecting ecological, social and economic criteria. With residential buildings responsible for 40% of Europe’s produced energy and CO2 emissions, the potential for energy saving is huge. The Longlife project has stepped in to see how the combined efforts of Denmark, Lithuania, Poland, Germany and voluntary Russia can make a difference. Longlife contributed to the EU strategy 2020 and developed practices, innovative technologies, unified procedures and guidelines for the design of a sustainable, energy efficient and resource saving residential building in the Baltic Sea Region. Longlife optimized methods for buildings, implements new technologies and harmonizes building procedures. Five national Longlife pilot projects are the result of the implemented common benchmarks for sustainability with regional adaption. The knowledge transferred between five partners from DK, DE, LT, PL and RU.
The Longlife partners worked in three competence teams in three steps. In a first step existing procedures for planning, permit and tendering for developing and operating housing were analysed. This comparative overview in “Analysis and comparison” leaded to added transnational value. Report 1 “Analysis and comparison”reflects the best applicable features of the countries’ processes in an effort to introduce new, innovative and higher standards. In second step requirements, standards and criteria were jointly developed to improve the existing procedures, practices and technologies to new, innovative and higher standards under the aspects of energy efficiency, sustainability, resource saving buildings and low lifecycle costs. Report 2 “Standards and criteria” is an added transnational value and intended to be used by authorities, chambers etc. for future legislation. For example: the total annual energy demand of each of the five Longlife pilot buildings does not exceed 40 KWh/m²/a.
The lead partner told in an interview, that there is more than one surprising result in the project.
Longlife developed three tools in regard to initial and operating costs, energy and CO2 – emission. It might be that these tools already exist, but the particular at Longlife is the combination of all the tools in order to calculate a new building as a whole.
Furthermore it was impressive to see that the developed standards were successfully implemented and the functionality was proofed by planning five pilot projects in Denmark, Germany, Lithuania, Poland and Russia. With the help of the Prototype catalogue and the Longlife tools a simplified planning process for sustainable and energy efficient buildings was remarkable.
Achievements of the project so far:
Longlife was working with the method of triple helix in three competence teams.
Team 1- Engineering and building technology standards - science
Team 2- Administration procedures, licensing and tendering rules - administration
Team 3- Economical and financial basis – public companies
The virtual project space- share point was the Longlife transnational office. It was working to guarantee the transfer of extensive data and as a base for the interchange project information. This virtual office was very useful in preparing the pilot project. The national data sets of the pilot buildings were very large. All partners were using this office also to get the actual information’s and exchange the available documents. At the Longlife web page, www.longlife-world.eu, news are available as a diary. There are also information about coming events, press releases and Longlife outputs. The results of Longlife are published in reports.
Report Longlife 1 “Analyze and Comparison„, report Longlife 2 “Development of standards”and report Longlife 3, prototype design and pilot projects.
Longlife developed some tools to measure the efficiency from the buildings, e.g. energy consumption, cost efficiency, CO2 emission. These tools are used to certify a building with the Longlife Performance Pass (LPP). The LPP was published at the Final conference. All external expertise’s like “Support in legal matters concerning building permits in different countries”, Analysis of economic instruments for providing incentives for sustainable, energy efficient and resource saving residential buildings in the EU” and “Evaluation of existing assessment schemes and outline of a transnational communication and evaluation framework for residential construction towards sustainability“ are published.
The results of the established the Longlife design class 2010 and 2011 to teach the method of the integrated design were used in the Longlife project through an evaluation process. The results of the Longlife design class 2010 are published in a reader.
The exhibition “Longlife design class 2010” was presented on SET2010, on the BSR Program conference Jyvaskyla and on Longlife workshop in Copenhagen 2010.
Longlife was engaged in the Sustainable Energy Technologies network with yearly conferences as a good platform for innovative technologies to save energy and to use renewable energy. Longlife attended the conference in Aachen 2009, Shanghai 2010 and Istanbul 2011.
The Longlife Institute e.V. was founded to continue the outstanding work and transnational cooperation around projects of sustainable, energy efficient and resource saving residential buildings. The Longlife Institute extends the projects and promotes their results along with expanding the gained network
